He realizes that his script, paired with the ability of the performers at his disposal ensures that no excessive measures are required other than an excellent background score which is comprised largely of string instruments (not too dissimilar to the score of Naked which is another excellent film by the same director). Fortunately, Mike Leigh’s maturity and skill as a filmmaker ensures that this is not the case. This very easily could have been a two-hour long overly sentimental and insufferable melodrama.
